Epcor Tower is a high-rise office building located in downtown Edmonton. The tower features two spires with flagpoles, and until 2017, when JW Marriott Edmonton was completed, it was the tallest building in the city, including its spires. In this article on Edmonton Future, we will explore the history, construction, and functions of Epcor Tower.
History of Construction
The construction of Epcor Tower began in 2007 when Epcor Utilities decided to build a new office space to accommodate its growing workforce. The company required 24,000 square metres of space for 1,100 employees. On December 7, 2007, Epcor selected the developer Qualico to construct the tower near CN Tower. Epcor signed a 20-year lease as the primary tenant of the building.
Epcor Tower was built according to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, a globally recognized green building certification system. The initiative focuses on reducing energy and water consumption while ensuring sustainable construction and operational efficiency. The tower was completed in 2011, becoming the first new office tower in Edmonton in 17 years and the tallest in the city at the time.
In April 2008, the Edmonton City Council initiated the construction of a 180-metre underground segment of the LRT (Light Rail Transit) line beneath the building. This project ran parallel to the construction of the tower, saving the city an estimated $140 million. Qualico also proposed opening a new Canadian national gallery within the tower, but the government ultimately cancelled this plan.
Epcor Tower is part of Edmonton’s “New Downtown” and is located within walking distance of Rogers Place, the Royal Alberta Museum, and several other cultural and entertainment venues.
